Looks cool, calm, inviting and safe, doesn't it? And you're thinking, "I know how to swim...I'll be fine." Think again. Not only would you be trespassing you could become seriously injured and even die. Quarries and Sand Plants are NOT a place to play, swim, dive, climb, fish, hunt or ride ATVs or dirt bikes. Stay Out - Stay Alive is a program that was started by the US Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as a public campaign to educate children and adults about the existing hazards of quarries and sand plants. Water filled quarries hide rock ledges and other hazards. The walls of a quarry are steep and slippery making it hard to get out of the water. Excavated vertical cliffs, called highwalls, can be unstable and prone to collapse. Banks at a sand plant can also be very unstable. And for both quarries and sand plants the water can be deceptively deep and dangerously cold.
